Os produtos agrícolas e géneros alimentícios com denominação registada
estão associados à tradição, ruralidade, história, natureza, região ou
área geográfica de um país. Portugal possui uma diversidade importante
destes produtos que emergiu das caraterísticas singulares e conhecimentos
populares e que lhes conferem particularidades únicas. O processo de
certificação é um instrumento importante e eficaz cuja divulgação poderá
ser um contributo para promover a biodiversidade, potenciando a sustentabilidade
económica de um país, sobretudo de regiões desfavorecidas.
Assim, este trabalho pretendeu realizar um levantamento da informação
referente aos produtos agrícolas e géneros alimentícios com denominação
registada, sob os regimes de qualidade DOP, IGP e ETG na Europa, e
efetuar um estudo comparativo entre Portugal e os outros países da União
Europeia. Verifica-se que para Portugal estes produtos apresentam uma
importância considerável, justificada pelo número de produtos registados
e pelo facto de Portugal ser o 4º país europeu com maior número de
alimentos com denominação registada. A promoção do conhecimento e a
divulgação e informação acerca destes produtos contribuirá sem dúvida
para a preservação da biodiversidade, para a sustentabilidade e para o
crescimento económico destas regiões.
Agricultural products and foodstuffs with registered name are associated with tradition, rural life, history, nature, a region or a geographical area of a country. Portugal has a large diversity of products that emerged from the unique features and popular knowledge, and which give them unique characteristics. The certification process is an important and effective instrument which could be a contribution to promoting biodiversity, enhancing the economic sustainability of a country, especially in less favoured regions. Therefore, the aim of this work was to conduct a survey of the information on agricultural products and foodstuffs with registered name under the quality schemes PDO, PGI and TSG in Europe, and make a comparative study between Portugal and the other countries of the European Union. It appears that for Portugal these products are of considerable importance, justified by the number of registered products and the fact that Portugal is the 4th European country with the largest number of foods with registered name. Promoting knowledge and dissemination about these products will undoubtedly contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, sustainability and economic growth in these regions.
