Abstract(s)
A perceção parental do estado nutricional (EN) infantil,
O presente trabalho avaliou a perceção
The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic context combined with the obesogenic environment in which many children live and the already high prevalence of childhood obesity in Portugal, are identified as factors of high risk for the development or worsening of the current disease most prevalent in childhood. Parental perception of children's nutritional status (NS), especially the parents' inability to recognize their children's overweight has been pointed out as another reason for the increase in childhood obesity. The present study analyzed the parental perception of their children NS, who participated in community and school based program, MUN-SI Cascais 2019/2020, during the confinement by COVID-19. It also assessed the prevalence of parental overweight and obesity before and during this period. The results of this study showed that although 35.4% of the respondents said that, in their perception, their child's weight increased during the confinement period, more than half (61.1%) did not show any concern about a possible children weight gain in this period. Mothers (most respondents) reported an initial diagnosis of obesity (3.6%) lower than that the one analyzed in the pre-confinement period (7.5%). There was also a statistically significant increase (p<0.01) in the prevalence of overweight (from 24.7% to 39.4%) and obesity (+ 5.1%) in mothers, during confinement. Thus, in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, in which parental modeling is highlighted and overweight is aggravated, it is important that interventions that address childhood obesity also include guidance tools that help parents to more accurately assess their children EN.
