Abstract(s)
The introduction of simplified nutrition labelling systems is considered one of the best ways to promote healthy food choices and, consequently, to prevent and control non-communicable chronic diseases in the population. In Portugal, Government-endorsed policy on interpretative nutrition labelling is still lacking, however different simplified labelling systems have been used by several economic operators in the national market. Multiple traffic lights label consists of an individual analysis of four nutrients (lipids, saturated fatty acids, sugars and salt) with the assignment of one of the traffic lights colours (green, yellow and red) for each nutrient. The Nutri- -Score system indicates the overall nutritional quality of a given food item, associating them with a colour, allowing consumers to choose healthier foods. The objective of this study was to classify the nutritional quality of breakfast cereals, available at the Portuguese market, using two FoP (front- -of-pack) labelling systems: Multiple traffic lights and Nutri-Score. From the 50 analysed breakfast cereals, Multiple traffic lights identifies sugar content as the most critical nutrient. Fifty six percent (56%) of the analysed breakfast cereals contained high levels of sugar (over 22.5 g/100 g) (red colour). With Nutri-Score 82% (n=41) of breakfast cereals have been classified as less healthier (yellow and light orange). In a context in which the informed choice of healthy food is privileged, the simplified nutrition labelling systems are more effective at communicating with the consumer, emerging as an important tool in both health literacy and informed decision making.
