Abstract(s)

Periods of extreme cold have been shown to be associated with an increase risk of death during the winter, in particular with cardiovascular and respiratory deaths. Despite the temperate climate, within Europe, Portugal presents one of the highest excess winter deaths. The objective of the present work was to estimate the effect of extreme cold temperatures in the main cities of Portugal, aiming the development of a cold spells surveillance system.
