Resumo(s)

The use of chemicals in a wide range of products, from fields of application as varied as biomedicine or agriculture, has brought undeniable benefits to society. However, it is also important to assess, control and minimize potential costs, in terms of long-term impacts on human health and the environment quality. In order to enable chemicals risk assessment and management based on scientific evidence, it is crucial to know the real exposure of citizens to chemicals as well as their adverse effects on human health. Aiming at filling the knowledge gaps in this area and promoting innovative approaches, the European Commission will fund a European Biomonitoring Program under the Horizon 2020 Societal Challenges on Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing, called the European Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU). INSA is a partner of the Consortium formed by the joint effort of 38 partners from 26 countries. This program intends to coordinate and promote human biomonitoring across Europe to improve scientific evidence on the exposure of citizens to chemicals and the possible effects on their health. It will also attempt to bridge the fields of scientific research and regulation in order to support the formulation of better environment and health policies.
