Abstract(s)
Dialysis and kidney transplantation are renal replacement therapies available for patients with end stage renal disease. In comparison to dialysis, renal transplantation is associated with a substantial reduction in the risk of mor tality and cardiovascular events, as well as with clinically relevant improvements in patients' quality of life. The objective of this study is to compare the renal transplantation activity in Por tugal with the activity of the other European Union countries. This study are based on information from the Global Obser vator y on Donation and Transplantation of Spain, collected and produced by the collaboration between the World Health Organization and the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes, from where we collected the available data regarding to Por tugal for the years between 2003 and 2016. In 2009, Por tugal was the countr y in the European Union with the higher number of deceased donors transplants per million population. In 2012, Por tugal drops to the 7th place, reaching, in 2014, its worst position since 2003. In terms of deceased donor transplants, Por tugal had already reached top positions in the ranking here presented, but in relation to living donor transplantation, Por tugal's positions have been just poor.
