- Pilot project on the implementation of SSD2 in the frame of the electronic transmission of harmonized data collection of analytical results to EFSAPublication . Oliveira, LuísaBackground: -In 2011 Portugal received funding from EFSA to implement the SSD within its data management systems for chemical contaminants data collection and report; -Within the project a national platform “alimentos PT.ON.DATA” was created and is currently used to report data on chemical contaminants and food additives (SSD1); -In 2014 EFSA awarded eight contracts as a result of the “Pilot project on the implementation of SSD2 in the frame of the electronic transmission of harmonised data collection of analytical results to EFSA” (OC/EFSA/DCM/2013/05). Portugal is one of the awarded countries and is currently executing the project in the domains of chemical contaminants, pesticide residues, food additives and biological monitoring In 2015 a new contract (OC/EFSA/DCM/2015/02) was awarded and Portugal will test and implement SSD2 to the residues of veterinary medicinal products data domain.
- Progesterone in breast cancer angiogenesisPublication . Botelho, M.C.; Soares, R.; Alves, H.The involvement of steroid hormones in breast carcinogenesis is well established. Recent evidence suggests that angiogenesis can be regulated by hormones. Both oestrogen and progesterone have been implicated in the angiogenic process of hormone-dependent cancers, such as breast cancer. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is a growth factor involved in angiogenesis in breast cancer that is up-regulated by estrogens. In our study we evaluated the role of progesterone in the expression of this angiogenic growth factor commonly up-regulated in breast cancer. Our findings indicate that progesterone activates an angiogenic pathway involving VEGF stimulation. The elucidation of specific angiogenic pathways promoted by progesterone can raise new therapeutic targets at least in a subset of breast cancers responsive to progesterone.
- Characterisation of the Lipid Profile of the Portuguese PopulationPublication . Mariano, CibelleCardiovascular disease (CVD), particularly coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The common forms of CVD have a complex aetiology in which interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors play an important role.
