| dc.description.abstract | Cyanobacteria are phytoplanktonic organisms ubiquitous in freshwaters that under favorable environmental conditions can reach high biomass densities (blooms). Eutrophication of the water bodies and climate change are increasing the frequency of these blooms. Some cyanobacterial strains are frequently associated with the production of toxins and, since freshwaters are usually used for human consumption, recreational activities and agriculture, cyanobacterial blooms pose risks to public health, and impair tourism and recreation. | pt_PT |
